Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
